As we all know and as has been extensively discussed in FS forums, AVSIM was attacked by a hacker on 12th May and brought down – library, forums, back-up system - everything. It is now clear from statements by Tom Allensworth, CEO of AVSIM, that nothing can be recovered of what was hosted there. AVSIM was a tremendous resource and entirely free to the whole community. For most people uploading files, it was the preferred central library, for a number of reasons. That meant that, for the whole community, it was the largest central point to download repaints, model, flightplans, Afcads, scenery – every item of freeware you needed to enhance your FS. AVSIM was also a great resource for learning about new releases by the payware organisations and for straightforward reviews of their products. AVSIM was so well organised, many of us had the impression it was a commercial organisation with a large paid staff. It was not – AVSIM was run by volunteers on systems primarily paid for by donations received. Sadly, those donations did not amount to enough to facilitate more secure systems, including better back-up systems. Alpha India Group has immediately moved to make all AIG releases – models, repaints, flightplans, Afcads – available from a site at: You can find our files here until such time as AVSIM is back up and running again. Future AIG releases will be added to the files hosted here and we are discussing ways of enabling other people to host their repaints etc. with us. The good news is that AVSIM will be back. However, getting AVSIM back online is no cheap proposition – an entire new system to handle all the demands we as users make of it has to be built – still by volunteer staff. To come back again, AVSIM needs the help of all those who can afford to donate to it – no matter how small an amount. There are many thousands of users, so even $10 really does make a difference. However, everybody understands that, especially in the current climate, not everyone can afford even that.
