Title: AIG Moving to New Server
Post by: Ben on January 03, 2019, 08:56:45 AM
Dear AIG members,

Happy New Year to you all!

The current hosting company we use is charging us an insane amount of money, so we were looking at alternative options. Johan kindly suggested a Danish company  (one.com) which offers more at a fraction of the cost we are currently paying.

Once we finishing checking to make sure it meets our needs, we will temporarily close the AIG forum as we migrate to the new server. I've been told that domain transfers are much quicker now, but it may take up to 24 hours.

Once we finish the migration, we will be working on a new website, and also a shop where you can buy AIG branded merchandise to support our costs. :)

Thanks for your patience.  ::cheers::

Saving money is always a good plan as long as there are no deficiencies in the new one.

Just a quick update on our progress.

There was some additional verification required from the new hosting company, so I had to submit a copy of my passport. Once they've verified AIG isn't anything dodgy or illegal :heehee:, they will activate our new account.

As soon as that is done, I will immediately begin the migration as our old hosting account expires on the 12th.

So please be prepared for the forum to go offline sometime in the next day or so (hopefully only for a few hours) while we transfer the data over.

 ::cheers::

Thankfully Ben was verified! I would probably be denied.  :rules:

My suggestion is to update the front page posting with current information for people that do not see this message thread.

We're now on the new server.  ::party::

Had a few hiccups along the way, but got there in the end, although there may be a few bugs to iron out over the coming days.

A huge thank you to Kai for helping with the migration.  ::cheers::

I'm not able to send private messages and get always an error message. Can you confirm that and have a look on it please? Thanks!

I just tried sending you a PM and it sent without an error. Has anyone else had this error? Could you take a screenshot of the error and post it below? Thanks

I also got an error, when trying to send a PM:

Please try again. If you come back to this error screen, report the error to an administrator.

Then I clicked on back and tried it again:

your message is well received and I could send a reply to it. However, trying to send an message to another member (sharklet_a319 aka Chris) was not successfull. Still the same error message as posted by Robert.

It's very strange. As Florian had same issue when trying to PM me, while 3 others were succesfull without any problem.

@Mario: You can go with Skype in the meantime.

I just (15 minutes ago) tried to disable the option to send PM's. And after I saved it, I enabled it again and saved. I have no idea if it's working, but it's worth a try now.

Also got a message on my own site, saying the registration is not working either. Will have a look at that.

EDIT: It's correct the registration is broken too.

Can provide some more information, getting a database error when trying to send a message containing special characters: In this case "e`"
(see it doesn't work here either - but possibly it also didn't work before - can't tell)

I wonder if the problem is the formatting in the database. Right now it's ISO-something, and there was an option to convert it to UTF-8, which supports special characters etc. This wasn't an issue on the old server, but I may need to convert it on the new server.
