32bit Textures?
« on: October 20, 2011, 03:35:04 PM »
Hi all, first post on the forums here. Im just starting to tread the water with updating my own AI and must say im enjoying it immensely. Just a question though, when a repaint comes with 32bit textures does everyone here use them instead of the normal ones? What are the advantages and disadvantages when it comes to quality and performance? Any answers are welcome and thanks in advance.

Hi there! To explain it shortly: it totally depends of your system. For example; imagine a busy KJFK airport with tons of AI. 100 airplanes all consisting of 32 bits textures.
- This makes 100 x 4 = 400MB to load (at daytime).
- If you reduce quality a bit to DXT3; it will be 100 x 1 = 100MB
- When you experience shimmering and add mip maps to the textures it will be 100 x 1,33 = 133 MB..
- Last option is DXT1 (even less quality) 100 x 512 KB = 50 MB

On the quality side, DXT3 with mip maps is great! With DXT1 you will notice some more blurries.

Hope this helps ;)

Hi Er!k thanks for the quick and helpful response. This is the new system im currently waiting to arrive that I will be putting FS9 on, in your opinion do you think it will be able to handle the option with most quality? (Mostly using 32bit textures):

Operating System: Windows 7 Professional (64-bit)
Power Supply: Modular 850W Power Supply (80 Plus Certified)
Processor: Core i7 2600K 8MB Cache Socket 1155
CPU Cooler: Thermaltake FRIO CPU Cooler
Graphics Card: nVidia GeForce GTX 570 1280MB GDDR5 PCI Express Graphics Card
Memory: 8GB Corsair DDR3 1600MHz C9 Dual Channel Memory Kit (2 x 4GB)
Motherboard: Asus P8P67 Pro Intel P67 (Socket 1155) Motherboard
HDD One: Seagate 1TB Barracuda 7200.12 32MB Cache SATA III Hard Disk Drive
HDD Two: Seagate 500GB Barracuda 7200.12 16MB Cache SATA III Hard Disk Drive
Optical Drive One: Blu-Ray Reader & DVD-RW Combo Drive

Your system is looking pretty good actually! But you can still get FS on its knees with i.e. FSDreamTeam KJFK, PMDG NGX and AI :) So it will be trial and error. See how your system performs without AI, with 32 bits AI and then determine whether the texture size is good for you!

Academic point: When there is no alpha channel (i.e. reflection for our purposes) then DXT3 and DXT1 are bitwise identical. The catch: None of the popular image manipulation tools (imagetool, DXTbmp) can do the lossless conversion reliably for all cases.

So what personally I do is that I use DXT1+mips whenever imagetool can convert to DXT1 with "Alpha: none" and DXT3+mips in all other cases.
