VTBD
« on: May 24, 2009, 04:24:41 PM »
Hi all,

I just wanted to ask whether someone knows if in real life the old Bangkok Airport - VTBD (Don Muang Intl Airport) is still used by international and domestic carriers.

I am asking this because I still have quite a number of flightplans directing planes there instead of VTBS.

I was about to change all VTBD entries to VTBS but I decided to check it out with you first.

thanks,

Only Nok Air and One-Two-Go still operate flights in and out of Don Muang. Only domestic flights though.

Peter

I believe the aviation authorities are closing Don Muang.

Thank you all for your information, I will therefore change all VTBD entries to VTBS excluding the airlines you mentioned. (Nok Air and One-two-go)

Therefore I beleive that not even Thai Airways operate any longer to this airport, maybe only some domestic flights.

Thanks again,

joscarcal

The airlines should have gone back by the end of March. VTBD is an RTAF base, so military flights will still use it.

I miss flying into Don Muang, it had character.

It was pretty cool landing on the south runway, then crossing the golf course to get across the other runway and on to the terminal. I remember looking out my window hoping that no golfers or golf-carts would get sucked up into the engines, which were well over the grass. You definitely wanted to taxi with no thrust and very slowly.

It was also much closer to the crew hotel, about a 10 minute bus ride. Now it takes about 45mins without traffic! Has taken as long as 2 hours before  :groan:

Almost mandatory to bring a beverage or two for the bus ride.  ::cheers::

Yeah, I remember the first time I landed in VTBD, on runway 03R, how surprised I was seeing that golf course between the 2 runways  ::happy::

I won't call it playing golf - but I've lost many golf balls there.

I made a change to Hong Kong and Bangkok about a year ago. All my cargo flights and high end GA like BBJ and Challengers go to Kai Tak and Don Maung, leaving VHHH and VTBS for passenger aircraft only.
